I won’t sugarcoat it: Manchester United’s midfield depth right now feels like a porcelain teapot on a unicycle. As the January 2026 window swings open, Ruben Amorim is trying to navigate a season with only five listed senior central midfielders in the official first-team squad: Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.

But the actual usage tells a more uncomfortable story. Mainoo has not started a single Premier League match this campaign. Ugarte has only been named in the starting lineup twice, while Mount has five starts. That means Fernandes and Casemiro have effectively become Amorim’s security blanket. Should either pick up a knock, United’s midfield plan could fold like origami in a rainstorm.

That is why the noise around Olympiacos wonderkid Christos Mouzakitis interests me. The 18-year-old has already collected a Golden Boy Web award after polling more than one million votes in Tuttosport’s recognition of the best under-21 prospects across Europe. He is not yet a household name in England, but his rise in Greece has been rapid: seven senior caps for the Greece national team already, plus a breakthrough campaign at Olympiacos that began when he was just 17.

I keep thinking of Mouzakitis as a locked violin case: you can see the craftsmanship from the outside, but only time on the pitch will reveal the full instrument inside. He became the third-youngest player in Greek Super League history when he debuted, and Olympiacos manager Jose Luis Mendilibar has spoken glowingly about the blend of effort and inspiration. After his first senior goal, Mendilibar said:

“He works hard, just like all the players do. Anyone in the squad has to put in the effort. But beyond effort, he has got the talent and quality that help him even more. We are happy every time he is in the starting lineup and contributes.

“Inspiration is a great feature for a footballer, but when you have skill, it turns inspiration into something meaningful.”

So why are Manchester United genuinely interested? Reports from Greek outlet Sportal, relayed by Sport Witness, claim United have sent scouts to watch Mouzakitis on multiple occasions. The competition is not soft, though. Arsenal, Napoli, AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Villarreal have all been credited with interest. That is a crowded marketplace, but United may have a financial argument on their side.

The Premier League alternatives being linked with Old Trafford are far pricier. Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest and Carlos Baleba of Brighton & Hove Albion are both likely to cost north of £60 million. Mouzakitis would not arrive with that level of Premier League experience, but he could be available for a fraction of the fee. Some reports even suggest a £40 million tag is wide of the mark, which sounds almost quaint compared with modern midfield premiums.

I am not ignoring the obvious gamble. Mouzakitis does not have Premier League experience, and Greek Super League form does not always translate cleanly to Old Trafford. But signing him would not require United to remortgage the Theatre of Dreams. In a squad where the drop-off after Fernandes and Casemiro has looked steep, a technically gifted teenager with European club football exposure, international caps, and a habit of turning inspiration into output could be the ideal low-cost bet.

For me, United’s midfield needs are less about finding another big-name centrepiece and more about building a parachute that works before the plane hits turbulence. Mouzakitis may not solve every problem immediately, but he represents the kind of future-proofing move that keeps a squad from becoming its own anchor. If Amorim wants a skilful, motivated midfielder who can grow into the shirt rather than demand it at peak market value, this is a transfer rumour worth taking seriously in January 2026.
